What Is Oxytocin?

Oxytocin is a nine-amino-acid (nonapeptide) neuropeptide produced mainly in the paraventricular and supraoptic nuclei of the hypothalamus and released from the posterior pituitary. It was the first peptide hormone to be sequenced and synthesized, work by Vincent du Vigneaud that was recognized with the 1955 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Because of that long history, the oxytocin peptide is one of the most thoroughly characterized reference compounds in neuroendocrinology.

Molecular Structure

Oxytocin is a cyclic peptide: a disulfide bond between the cysteine residues at positions 1 and 6 forms a six-residue ring, followed by a three-residue tail (Pro-Leu-Gly) with an amidated C-terminus. The intact disulfide ring is essential to its structure, which is why storage and handling conditions that protect the disulfide bond matter in the laboratory. Oxytocin is structurally related to vasopressin, which differs at two positions (3 and 8).

Oxytocin Receptor (OXTR) Signaling in Research Models

Oxytocin acts on the oxytocin receptor (OXTR), a class A G protein-coupled receptor. In cell-based research models, OXTR couples mainly to Gq/11, activating phospholipase C, generating IP3 and diacylglycerol and raising intracellular calcium. OXTR is expressed in the brain and in peripheral tissues, so oxytocin is widely used as a reference agonist in receptor-binding, calcium-flux and signaling assays. Because oxytocin and vasopressin are closely related, researchers often include vasopressin receptor controls when interpreting results.

Research Applications of Oxytocin Peptide

Social Neuroscience and Behavioral Research

Oxytocin is a standard tool compound in published preclinical research on social recognition, affiliative behavior and maternal behavior in animal models, and on the neural circuits in the hypothalamus, amygdala and reward pathways that mediate them.

Neuroendocrine and Stress-Axis Research

Laboratories study how the oxytocin system interacts with the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, and how OXTR expression is regulated, including genetic and epigenetic variation in the OXTR gene.

Reproductive and Smooth-Muscle Physiology

Oxytocin is a classic reference agonist for in-vitro studies of uterine and mammary smooth-muscle contraction and of how OXTR expression changes in reproductive tissues.

Peripheral Receptor and Metabolic Studies

OXTR is also found in tissues such as adipose tissue, heart and pancreatic islets, and researchers use oxytocin to investigate receptor signaling in these peripheral systems.

Oxytocin 5mg or Oxytocin 10mg?

Both vials contain the same peptide, tested to the same standard. The 10mg vial holds twice the material of our Oxytocin 5mg vial, which suits research protocols that need more peptide from a single lot.

Quality, Third-Party Testing and Certificate of Analysis

Every lot of Oxytocin 10mg is third-party tested by an independent laboratory, with purity of 99%+ verified by HPLC and identity confirmed by mass spectrometry. Certificates of Analysis are published on our COA page, where you can review the current lot before ordering. COAs are published online and are not included in the package.

Storage and Handling

  • Store the lyophilized powder at -20°C, protected from light and moisture.
  • Let the sealed vial reach room temperature before opening to limit condensation.
  • Reconstitute under aseptic conditions with a sterile solvent chosen for your research protocol, and avoid reducing agents that can break the disulfide bond.
  • Store reconstituted solutions at 2–8°C, split into aliquots and avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles.

For reconstitution, Hospira Bacteriostatic Water 30mL is available separately.

Oxytocin 10mg FAQ

What is Oxytocin 10mg?

Oxytocin 10mg is a vial containing 10 mg of lyophilized oxytocin, a cyclic nine-amino-acid peptide (CAS 50-56-6, C43H66N12O12S2, approx. 1007.2 g/mol). BioSim Peptides supplies it for in-vitro and laboratory research use only.

Is the Oxytocin from BioSim Peptides third-party tested?

Yes. Every lot of Oxytocin 10mg is third-party tested by an independent laboratory, with purity of 99%+ verified by HPLC and identity confirmed by mass spectrometry. Certificates of analysis are published on our COA page (biosimpeptides.com/coa).

Is a Certificate of Analysis included with my order?

Certificates of analysis are published on our COA page (biosimpeptides.com/coa) rather than shipped in the package, so you can review the current lot before you order.

How should Oxytocin 10mg be stored?

Store lyophilized Oxytocin at -20°C, protected from light and moisture. After reconstitution, keep it at 2-8°C, split it into aliquots and avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles. Avoid reducing agents, which can break the peptide’s disulfide bond.
